Cherry G81-3000 LPNGB review (Cherry MY)

This time; a video a few of you knew was coming; a Cherry MY one! In addition to those black ones without the cable, I found a G81-3000 with one, so here it is! Hope you enjoy the video :) .

I broke out my box of loose NMB dome with slider sliders and from that picture it would definitely appear the two are identical. Admittedly, all mine are white instead of grey. It's possible NMB made these for NEC, or NEC made them under license. It's a shame the board doesn't show an FCC ID, that's...

It's also got four goddamn batteries in it, what's that all about? Oo

The font does look Key Tronic-esque, I agree. And the LED windows appear identical to those on my Hi-Tek 725. Really weird. If someone here gets it, please let us know what it is!

OEMMAX MCK-101: at $20 plus shipping atm. Should be Alps SKCM Blue. Ortek is the OEM too so it might have doubleshot caps as a bonus.

Looks like a Monterey K104 to me. Can come with white Alps, blue Alps or Montereys. All good switches. The latter switch even got its moniker from this board.

Maybe because the shipping is three times the cost of the board, not counting import taxes which could double the whole figure again? :p

It's normal, yellowing depends on the composition of the plastic used. They add bromine to ABS as a flame retardant and when it's exposed to UV it causes yellowing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retr0bright Many manufacturers of old school doubleshots (honeywell, beamsprings, etc) apparently didn't...

The penetration into the cap is a good solid sign of dye sublimation. Even the deepest dyesub doesn't have to go all the way through the plastic. It's not built up from behind, like doubleshot! A better picture of the top of the cap would be good. The one you have there looks like a dodgy exposure....

Yeah, that sounds more like normal shipping charges. In the UK however, privatisation hasn't QUITE worked out all that well for the people.

They are most definitely dyesubbed. I paid $5 for it, so (in the name of keyboard knowledge) I could slice a key in half and confirm the dyesub definitively with photographs. Sorry, I misread that at first, I thought you HAD sliced one in half and confirmed it yet. Anyway, I have hundreds of these ...

The switches are known for being quite fragile and easily pulled apart; not generally a sign of quality manufacture. I'd like to give them a try sometime, though - maybe I'll run into them somewhere along the way :) .

Cool, so they ARE dyesubbed, right? Just out of curiosity, how did you test it?

Don't bother with the acetone test. I've tested it on my KB-101A as well as on several 6300 and 6500 models. Definitely all ABS.

Excellent vid, Chyros. I had no idea Alps were serviceable without desoldering. 1992, that's a very late one for green Alps. By that time it's three years off the MouseFan Alps timeline already (although I think some companies were still using what must've been leftover stock for lock lights on some boards). It's also the only instance I've ever heard of green Alps on a Focus. ...

When I talk to people about old keyboards all that they can recall about them is that they were loud, or "clicky" as they call them (irrespective of whether they actually were). They never mention or remember that they were better to type on. To them it's just obsolete rubbish.
