Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

Bold to say that thick caps are overkill when the one saying it wants to recreate blue alps with no prior experience or even attempting something less ambitious.

I'd say go for thick caps. If he can shoot for blues, you can do what you want to do.

Thick all the way.

I nave had several Omnikey 101s, and never seen those arrow caps.
If you look a bit closer, you'll see that the keycaps have been swapped in places.

They are C.Itoh spherical dyesubs.

Re: Alps Appreciation

Does anyone know, if Brown ALPS tactile leaves fit in other ALPS housings? They do not, and if you shave the standard top housing to accommodate, or shave the dummy switchplate down, it's likely going to be inconsistent and not worth the trouble. You'd need a jig for it to be repeatable, and even t...

Re: Alps Appreciation

Desoldering is the best option. Alternatively, you can try using compressed air or contact cleaner to see if that helps. It might be debris or corrosion that's stopping the switch from making electrical contact. If it's worn to the point of fatigue in the contact plate, I've seen some people put som...

Re: Alps Appreciation

Just out of interest, does anybody game on their Alps keyboards as well? Or would it wear out the switches way too fast? You can game on Alps just fine. Though I rotate my boards, I've had many of my mainstays since 2015-2016 with nothing wearing out, per se. If the contact plates die, you can alwa...

This thread is a demonstration of users who have seemingly forgotten how to PM others.

This is a WTB thread, not a discussion thread. I appreciate that the dialog is filled with dismissive bullshit that misses the point and contributes nothing, but let's get back on track, eh?

Re: Alps Appreciation

Nah, I'd not spend that kind of money on it, for what it is. As for how I spotted it: I guess it's mostly just a lot of experience with Alps. When you get used to the differences between the two main types of top housings, it becomes a little trivial. Basically, the slits are fairly obvious on pine,...

Can anyone tell from this photo if the switch is ALPS (pine?) or a clone? It's a dark photo and turning up the levels in GIMP doesn't help.

Is white alps an absolute upgrade from black alps? Just asking about the regular one, not some fancy early almost - like - blue kind of white alps. Apples and oranges, really. Re: Alps Appreciation

This is only intended for caps with long stems. Yes, they clip on, but trying to recreate these would lead to some disappointment, as standard caps will not be able to reach a full-travel bottom out on these guards. I figure it's partly for stability, partly for dust protection, considering the stem...

Rare find? If the board is indeed blue Alps in a G80-3000, then I'd gather it's more likely a custom build (like my SKCL Brown build in an NCR G81-3077 case) or on an off-chance, some weird clone. :P

Interesting Greek Wang 725-3770 on eBay a while back. Anyone get it?

The date label here is using the Taiwanese date system, which why it seems so strange. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_ ... a_calendar

It would appear that this is from 1987 going by the table on the wiki page. :) That fits far better.

Calling the side keys spherical is definitely putting it loosely. :P They are the same profile found on certain MSXes and Bondwell laptops and so on, which look spherical, but feel incredibly flat to the touch.
