Re: Differentiating IBM 3101, 3270 & 5250 Model B/Model F/Model M keyboards
If you're going to do this there should probably be greater differentiation in the 3270 section. I'll add an additional photo to the summary soon. However the article itself makes this clear, showing both 'generations' of 3270 family Model Bs and a [bolded] suggestion for quick identification for e...

Re: Early Industrial Model M
I took some pictures of that early Industrial Model M that came with an IBM 5170 system I purchased recently. Interesting. Was the 5170 a standard model or 'industrialised' in some way? If you're wondering what it originally came with - IBM 7531 Industrial Computer, as per IBM doc ZA86-0135 . Techn...

Re: "Black Betty" - 1985 IBM Model M 1390110
I've spent this afternoon trying to find any written accounts of IBM-General Electric interactions during this time that might explain this keyboard. Naturally, if you try Googling the subject, you'll probably just find stuff about the GE Fanuc Workmaster II (a rebadged IBM PS/2 P70). However, after...

Re: "Black Betty" - 1985 IBM Model M 1390110
Very nice, I'm glad to see inside this! The internal birth certificate and its shop date check out with the rest of the days. When I saw the eBay listing, I was sus based on the birth certificate style - it's got elements of the slightly later IBM U.S. label and the early Lexmark label when I was ex...

Re: Guide on differentiating IBM 3101, 3270 & 5250 Model B/Model F/Model M keyboards
On another note, I'm also trying to make this info (terminal family per applicable keyboard) easier to find on my website. My Keyboard Part Number Database now has a "Known Host Systems" field that will list a given keyboard's possible hosts and provide a photo of said host. At the moment, this fiel...

Differentiating IBM 3101, 3270 & 5250 Model B/Model F/Model M keyboards
Earlier this week, I made an IBM keyboard ID guide aimed at terminal keyboards of the 3101, 3270 and 5250 compatible families! The goal was to satisfy some requests I got on how to identify what family of terminal a given keyboard belonged to. I've also seen a few examples of mid-'80s and '90s termi...

Re: June 1984 IBM Wheelwriter 5 Keyboard Assembly (P/N 1351000)
Those typewriter keyboards are especially nice. And that "CODE" key is very cool but unfortunately its companion space bar has different barrel spacing is not compatible with conventional M/F layouts (at least that is how I remember it). There's a 'light' mod you can do to get it to fit. You'll nee...

June 1984 IBM Wheelwriter 5 Keyboard Assembly (P/N 1351000)
I think this is the earliest Model M/Model M-based/membrane buckling spring keyboard I've seen, and it's a beauty! Includes typical early Model M and Wheelwriter/Quietwriter keyboard assembly perks such as rainbow plate, 'cushionless' pivot plates and factory-fitted O-rings. Plus, all rivets are int...

Re: Mini M Opened Up
I wonder if a Model M controller would work for those with controller issues? IMG_7037.jpg You can make your own bespoke controller (like the Mstar) but any old factory Model M controller won't work since the Mini M's matrix is larger and completely different to previous Model Ms (including 122-key...

IBM 5556-004: Keyboard Type 4 -- Katakana, P/N: 4773178 According to the sources, this keyboard uses the old JIS layout (JIS C 6233-1972), and is intended for use in IBM 5250 terminal emulation. I recently acquired some keyboard templates for IBM 5550 keyboards (IBM doc no. SX18-0760-0). I tried to...

I don't necessarily dispute what you said (especially "they don't know what they got" [in their warehouse]), but in this case, it's something that can be found on their website and has been for years. Regarding the SSK barrel plates and industrial cases, both were in fact added to their website afte...

Re: Is there a way to add lock lights to a Terminal Model M?
The locklights sticker was purchased from unicomp. Wait... So Unicomp actually has proper old locklight stickers for sale??? Yes, they're on their LED Overlay page. They’re like Siri. They didn’t know what they’re got, they’ll give entirely different responses on repeated inquiries, and yet just to...

Nice boards. I like the industrial grey one best. Strange the 2004 version is still without Win keys. That clit is removable, isn't it? IBM Japan 5576-C01 TrackPoint Keyboard and its Unicomp descendants
Hello! New article time. The 5576-C01 is [in my opinion] one of the coolest keyboards IBM fielded in the 1990s - it’s a buckling spring Model M with a TrackPoint pointing stick sporting a JIS layout and many unique design elements. It’s very likely the rarest IBM TrackPoint keyboard as well being a ...

Re: IBM Model F Part 1397000 - key mapping
Hi! For some context: P/N 1397000 is not an ordinary 122-key Model M (it's not a Model F, just FYI), it's an IBM PS/2 Host Connected Keyboard, a terminal emulator model ( Type IV 122-key Model M ) and as such has different default mappings to terminal-only 122-key Model Ms and Soarer's doesn't enume...

IBM/Unicomp Model M keyboard matrix simulators and 2KRO visualisers
Hello there! I - like I'm sure many here have - noticed that (to no fault of any particular person) how the IBM Model M's membrane key-matrix operates and what two-key rollover (2KRO) means can be misunderstood. Combined with many questions people have regarding Unicomp Mini Model M's improved key c...

It's interesting indeed. Bull is a French company that at this point in time was (probably amongst other things) selling rebranded IBM RS/6000 workstations... and this is the keyboard for one. 1980 IBM Electronic Typewriter Keyboard Assembly
My latest arrival, an IBM Electronic Typewriter model 50/60/75 keyboard assembly! I almost laughed when I picked it up - it’s a real dense brick at ~4.1kg. IBM Electronic Typewriters were a sort of intermediary between Selectrics and Wheelwriters, inheriting the golfball-style type element except it...

Re: IBM Model A - what is that
Aye, a rubber dome keyboard from what I can tell. The IBM Basic II Keyboard was the replacement for the Model M-based IBM Basic Keyboards (IBM Enhanced Keyboard with Quiet Touch, eg P/N 71G4644). Nothing remarkable about these to be honest. They appear to be rubber domes, but ones that they had Lexm...

Hard to say, they're just too dissimilar. I like them because they're not like other designs (except maybe short-throw Topre) if that makes sense. To be honest, it's best just to try it yourself. IBM or Toshiba CANPOS keyboards can be found cheaply on eBay and are usually the easiest way to try the ...

Interesting, if I find one on the cheap I might go for an IBM buckling sleeve, though I'll take it's probably worse than most decent mechanical switches out there from the sounds of things. "Worse" is subjective. I personally prefer using them to Cherry MX tactiles and most clones of and even some ...

They do come in dyesub and compact layouts, right? Pretty much all biege IBM buckling sleeve keyboards pre 2002 seem to be PBT dye-subs. The Models M3 and M4s certainly are, and the Models M7, M8, M9 and M11 POS keyboards made by Lexmark and Maxi Switch were too. However, after 2002, IBM cha...
