The SSK Manual (Extended Character Set with Space Saver Keyboard)
Hey guys, I have finally been getting around to digitizing some peculiar manuals thanks to Ellipse for reminding me to do so. While I've owned the manual that came with my SSK for a long time it dawned on me that I haven't seen anyone else talk about; maybe someone has but if so I am not aware of it...

I wonder if it's less an explicitly "built" version of the font and more just artifacts of the technology of the time. It might have been actual physical type somewhere. I thought this initially too, however the design clearly has characteristics which cannot be achieved exclusively by artifacts: i...

Do you know if the M50 uses M or F pivot plates? I would assume M. M; using F pivot plates wouldn't hit the M membrane where it needs to be. Same applies vice versa even if we were to assume M pivots were carbon impregnated. AFAIK nobody has used Model F springs in a Model M assembly, they may or m...

The Model M and Model F Font
Decided to break this in a dedicated thread as to not spam the Model F remake group buy as it's going off topic . I don't know how in-depth anyone has ever bothered to investigate the specific font used on Model Fs and (most) Model Ms. With the exception of the special characters the font used is i...

Thanks micrex. If anyone has any info on how IBM did the dye sublimation of the keys back in the XT days (early 1980s) I'd like to know. Their later dye sub work was not as thick, deep black from what I have seen. I'm not entirely certain the equipment for it changed. We can observe some of the cha...

Khers the font is just their test font; I have not provided them with the graphics. I expect the final font to look like the original XT caps. We are still waiting on key cap molds. Please see a few posts above for my update summary. I know the 'Model F / M' font isn't that widely discussed, howeve...

Oh, no no no. You do not want to repurpose that board. An Industrial M13 is very rare. Rare would be a strong word-- they're made by unicomp and don't feature a real TrackPoint II resulting in poor cursor handling. The least common M13s are the beige ones. (In my opinion) the black Maxiswitch M13s ...

What's the deal with RS6000 LPFs / LPFKs?
These have been brought up briefly before in listing, they're made by ALPS from what I read. Alan-Computech is selling them under two different listings, and I don't know what the difference is: #1 http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-RS6000-LPF-Keyboard-NEW-6094-020-/391254846846?hash=item5b189b2d7e:g:JRsAA...

You'd have to have the extra pads on the pcb, which would require amending that. I don't think that's a huge technical hurdle, as the windows keys were added at one point, but wonder if it's too late in the game for it. The demand may not be there to justify the expense. It's 99.9% too late at this...

It definitely gets paired with an Industrial 'luggable' computer. Unfortunately after looking up loads of the industrial computer system types, not all of them have photos available on the internet, and it's not possible to obtain HMMs for all of them. Unlike many other OEMs, nobody is interested in...

I have a question actually... how difficult would it be to tool in the extra barrels needed for the JP layout? In particular the split spacebar: http://www.geocities.jp/takabontetsu/5576-C01.jpg It would be awesome to use those keycaps on a MF and assign the others to extra macros (thus allowing eve...

Will there be another run of these badges? I'd definitely be interested in some. For reference, I took pictures of some of the original IBM badges (one on my SSK and the other on my M13). I've also compared it with the 'larger' black oval badges IBM manufactured-- you'll notice the fidelity isn't as...

Agree with XMIT, the size of the connector shouldn't make this decision. USB-B was already old 4 years ago, and used only on printers and some old external drives, just let it die. Techno Trousers' argument is also valid when looking at the future but I do believe that you can still change and adap...

The FSSK is a model F. It sounds louder than the F and I have the feeling that it requires a little more weight to actuate. I have anyhow not measured it. Yeah, the FSSK sounds louder than a "regular" Model F because it lacks the foam padding (louder is better in my opinion). When I tried some F pi...

Another option for replacing the cable on the FSSK-- The original SDL jack could still be used. Then this black SDL cable from unicomp could be purchased: http://www.pckeyboard.com/page/product/1379947 What could be then done is cut off the PS/2 section, solder on a USB connector (heatshrink the two...

Interesting, I put F AT back together without the foam and it definitely did not work (it rendered all of the springs unable to buckle). Soon as I put the foam back in, then all of the switches would properly buckle again... Perhaps it varies between Model Fs, I've always assumed the foam was for al...

I meant that in the long run, it would be perfect to have a xwhatsit controler in the PCB. Bor the time being, it will be a separated PCB, one of the standards used with model Fs. I know dfj & parak are working on their capsense controller which will hopefully offer more features than xwhatsit. It ...

Well I got a bit excited and couldn't wait: so I took a spare SSK apart (don't worry, this SSK wasn't in perfect condition). I then took the buckling springs out of my failed F AT-- and what do you know, it has precisely the required amount that an SSK needs! Not a spring more, or less: http://i.img...

Hey there, I'm totally interested in a PCB as well! I passed up a cheap 'unsaver' awhile back, and it's biting me ever since. But an FSSK would be even better (my biggest problem with the larger F 'boards is that you either custom build your desk or you specifically buy one for the keyboard). Here's...
