Re: Round 5: The Cappening

Oh, and the same thing goes for keyboards: make sure it has a switch type that you can live with! There are various Cherry MX switch types that broadly fall into two groups: tactile, such as the MX Blue (audible click) and MX Brown (quiet click); and linear, including the MX Black (medium spring wei...

Re: Round 5: The Cappening

And make sure you know what you're buying! A lot of people have preferences for particular key profiles; for example, I love SA and despise DSA and will variously like or tolerate the stuff in between. Here is a handy guide to give you an idea. Similarly, things like double-shot vs. sublimation, mat...

Re: IBM Model F, M, and HHKB

Mini-legends hiding in the corners of the keys, looking at me all shifty-eyed. Yes I'm tempted. But I need to get used to my Race's layout first so that anything else feels alien to me and I can complain about it being weird.

Re: Round 5: The Cappening

It just makes me weep when I see these really lovely keysets. Or more to the point, that they're no longer simply The Standard™ but that we've had the more modern-looking ugly crap since forever now. I mean it's great that there's still a niche for decent, usable keys, but really sad that it's a nic...

Re: IBM Model F, M, and HHKB

Does this have anything to do with EMACS? ew. I'm always going to think of Emacs as escape-meta-alt-control-shift. I guess I'll be the weirdo who prefers the Model M. I like the F but maybe it's just the insane layout (I mean excepting those who are fortunate enough to have the Big Ass Return versi...

Re: MX blacks: random impressions

Oh, that's a tough one: I dunno, really. I find myself gravitating towards the white-on-red but might that be garish with a pastel-green-and-grey keyboard? Sometimes my approach to aesthetics is try it and see; and sometimes it works... and often it doesn't! :D I'm liking the keyboard more and more ...

Re: MX blacks: random impressions

Very nice! Concerning the distracting LED: I've simply covered the slits under the left side of the space bar with black tape on all of my Vortex boards. (And on the right side I used clear tape - to prevent any dirt getting into it.) Good idea! I think I'll do that next. Still trying to get used t...

Re: MX blacks: random impressions

Some minor customisation, which will mean there's more to get used to but hopefully it'll be worth it in the long run. I've given up trying to move pn , and while fn can be moved with less trauma, I've decided it's just confusing. So they've stayed where they are. But I have finally (!!!) done the d...

Re: MX blacks: random impressions

Trying to reprogram it: maybe that should be best left to another day. What I'd like to do is to move the pn key to... I dunno, one of the keys that's less useful like caps-lock or right-ctrl but I dunno if that's possible; and to map whichever not-useful keys are left over to scroll-lock (for my KV...

Re: MX blacks: random impressions

And the thing that's been causing me all the stress, sitting there looking all innocent. As mentioned, the PMK Lime set works pretty well, with just the escape and delete keys looking slightly incongruous but actually I think it looks okay (and just for the record, the delete key in the top right is...

Re: MX blacks: random impressions

Well after all that my other half managed to find the errant slider. With a not inconsiderable amount of effort I managed to force it back into the switch and it works fine, rather surprisingly (to me, at least). Now all I need to do is get used to its slightly unorthodox layout; the only potential ...

Re: MX blacks: random impressions

I would be quite willing to solder and build a kit for you for free if you were to supply it, assuming it is just putting a build together that is a problem. I'm starting to think that might be the better option for me! I might get exactly what I want then... well, inasmuch as "exactly what I want"...

Re: MX blacks: random impressions

Yeah, stuff was definitely better in The Olden Days™. :D I'm probably just feeling a bit sorry for myself, given the long-anticipated keyboard. Which I am now using anyway, sans insert/delete key. Somewhat surprisingly, the PMK Lime key-set mostly accommodates its eccentricities apart from the unusu...

Re: MX blacks: random impressions

Becoming less and less impressed with Vortex. Whose decision was it to use 1) Phillips heads; 2) to use cheap screws made of soft metal; and 3) to use presumably automated equipment that misaligns and over-tightens them? Cue one stripped screw that is now impossible to remove unless I drill it out. ...

Wow, that's a lot of computing power from something so beige. I think I had a similar case from the '90s, the feet look familiar, though I forget if it was something I bought myself or a thing at work where I had a budget and got someone else to make it (its innards eventually ended up in some...

Re: MX blacks: random impressions

Well it seems it's a regular problem with Vortex keyboards. Usually with MX Clears but mine has Reds; I suspect it's mostly but not entirely Vortex to blame as I noticed that the keycaps were extremely variable in terms of how much they gripped, some obviously way too much whereas others almost fell...

The office I share with my fiancée (her desk is on the other side of the monitors, facing mine) - not quite r/battletops ready but at least it’s got it where it counts, namely the keyboards :) Cheeseplant! ahem. Cool swords. I want to order a custom made Witcher swords, but I guess this is going to cost as well.. I saw someone made them (some ironmongers), looked amazing. I would love to hang them on my wall... I spoke to my handy weaponsmith about that and he was slightly disparaging about the backscabbar...

Re: MX blacks: random impressions

Argh, disaster strikes! As I'd been up since about 2:30am I decided to relax with a beer or three by the afternoon while I was being all angsty online and then suddenly I had good reason to be angsty as my Ducky decided it would like a drink too. Yeah I know, considering I'm aware that I'm clumsy, p...

Re: Post your desktop.

I'm too lazy to unclutter my desk for a fancy picture. Either way, hanging on the wall above it, is a large ugly shadow box that I started work on, which was supposed to display my lightsaber hilt collection. But with Star Wars the way it is, I don't see the point in finishing work on it. I thought...

I'm often too much slow or too after the fact to get the nice collectible stuff! Plus I tend to break things, so my Hngmphblarg (I can never remember its actual name) is a custom job. It loses some of the detail of the prop but on the other hand it's a real sword made of sword steel with a full tang...

Oh, yeah, the swords. Seems I like collecting things: keyboards, swords, bass guitars, bits of computer equipment. But in the latter regard I really need a major clear-out to get rid of some of the last 25 years' worth of crap. I mean why do I even need a VGA cable any more? Yet I have loads. I'll k...

Haha, yeah, there is a bit of a hierarchy! The fancy leather-bound books go in the fancy cabinet, the OED, hardbacks and so on are on the tall shelves behind me, the paperbacks on the short bookcase that's obscured by the screen, and the "random stuff we don't really want on display" is on the least...

Those "mitt" things are very curious beasties! Colourful, though. As for me, no new chair yet, but I have replaced my desk with the somewhat more cosy one that was in the garage: and as such, I was forced to clear it off so it's briefly fit for photographing before it gets filled with clutter again....

Looks potentially interesting, but I'm a lard-arse and I worry about mesh seats! It's not so much the shipping costs, something that so often seems entirely random and I've seen free postage for heavy, bulky items to extortionate amounts for stuff that's small and light; and no matter the amount pai...

I barely use that finger on my right hand at all and often find it just politely stays out of the way for much of the time. Though while I've been typing this I've been noticing what it is doing which is using the backspace key and other stuff in the vicinity. I think on my left hand it sees more us...

Re: What is the best chair to stay 12 hours a day typing on the keyboard?

So now I've been directed to The Chair Thread I guess I'll ask my question here too! The title could apply to me: I spend a lot of time at my desk, but not all in one go. I do tend to get up and wander about quite a lot, and the longest I'll set in one, er, sitting is maybe 90 minutes to two hours i...
