Re: DIY Ergodox in sorry state
Yeah, that looks like it was damaged with water or acid or something ... A "solder-sucker" while the solder is being heated with the soldering iron is usually what is used to get solder from a hole. If the holes can't be used, alternatives available here are to replace a diode with a surface-mount d...

Re: Repairing a Drop CTRL (Hot-Swappable) PCB
Has the solder pad come loose from the PCB? If so, then there is not much you can do except perhaps apply some thin superglue underneath it. But that is something that I wouldn't try without using a microscope and some really precise tools. These hot-swap sockets are really infamous for breaking lik...

Re: What if I told you that model M flippers are actually _clickier_ than Model F?
The click does not come from the flipper hitting anything but from the spring when it reaches its "catastrophic buckling" state. Then the flipper and other parts transmit the sound, of course. It very much does. The spring is silent You are incorrect, sir. If you buckle a spring in just the right a...

I've seen Fentimans here in Sweden. Their web site is also localised for Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, so I guess they must be established there too. Julle is in Finland, BTW.

Re: What if I told you that model M flippers are actually _clickier_ than Model F?
Isn't the bump in the middle what presses the membranes together? I'd think the keyboard wouldn't work without them. The click does not come from the flipper hitting anything but from the spring when it reaches its "catastrophic buckling" state. Then the flipper and other parts transmit the sound, o...

What is the Pop It for?
Is it as an overlay to help disabled people find the keys? In that case, I suppose it must be for a specific keyboard model. The Apple keyboards don't fit perfectly.

Re: Unicomp New Model M is going to use a controleer with a Raspberry Pi Pico on it?
Yes you can buy the RP2040 loose, even as a hobbyist. There are a bunch of other RP2040 boards in different form factors (like Pro Micro, Feather, stamp-sized etc.) I wonder if the reason might be that Unicomp could be planning on supporting the Pi Pico W later on. That board's wireless module suppo...

Well, there's more to QMK than just the firmware. More, that is, to the user who's tasked with configuring it. The stuff that lives on your computer to *finally!* spit out the damn .hex file is the pain of it. Recent versions of QMK have support for VIA or the successor Vial : configuration using a...

Re: Are all PBT keycaps shine-resistant
In my experience, PBT keycaps too get shiny, but just take longer than ABS. In some PBT keycap sets, the space bar (and the space bar only) is actually ABS because it is more difficult to mould longer keys in PBT than in ABS. But I thought that applied mostly to vintage keyboards — and that new PBT ...

Keyboards for the IBM RS/6000 had a speaker. It was wired to the unused pins of the PS/2 connector.
The holes in the front of the case are supposed to be for drainage.

I honestly think the grippy stuff wasn't really planned obsolescence. At the time they came up with that stuff, I don't think anyone knew how long it would last. It solved an immediate problem, so they went with it. The sticky coating can be scratched or sanded off with the help of some naphta. A b...

Re: LiIon or NiMH?
Definitely not both - making something work equally well on 2.4 and 3.7V is unnecessary hard ... I don't know much about Li-ion battery charging, but I do know that the voltage from batteries usually changes as they discharge. So you'll probably need voltage regulation of some kind or another anywa...

I used to prefer NiMH, but I'd vote li-ion and internal charging over USB ... For a keyboard. BTW, I'd like to see a wireless mouse that supports both, or rather either - in the same compartment but physically with different contacts. To insert a AA battery you'd have to unplug the Li-ion battery. T...

The entire point of this is that the wrists shouldn't hurt while holding it. Unfortunately, the designers hadn't thought much that anything else would be ergonomic.

I superimposed the controller from the pic of the nanoCH32V305 board onto a pic of the Teensy++. I cut out the controller from the pins of the controller: not the solder pads/footprint, so you'd have to imagine there being longer solder pads in places where appropriate, and shorter when not. On the modern "Hellgrau" (light grey) G81-series keyboards, the larger keys (such as Backspace and Enter) are not compatible with Cherry MX. AEK keys are of PBT plastic, so it should be able to stand up to most solvents that you throw at it: acetone, nail polish remover, white spirit/turpentine, alcohol. I would try first with turpentine and then wipe that off with alcohol. If that does not work: acetone or nail polish remover. ("Nail po...
