Re: How to test Alps Switches?
Do a simple continuity test with ohm-meter first. If it is OK then continue with oscilloscope: Connect the switch in series with about 5k to10k resistor to a battery (1.5 - 10 V). Connect scope probe on the switch. Set up one-shot trigger on the falling edge on the scope and press the switch. Check ...

Re: Model F Nicked Case
There are people who specialize in mixing paints to just match the right colour of an older paint. Find them and get the nick painted. That being said, you will likely always be able to recognize the painted location if you really want to. Therefore my recommendation is starting mental exercises whi...

Why don't you use dark resin and white paint into recessed labels?

Interesing. duckduckgo claims this is the best: https://trulyergonomic.com/ergonomic-keyboards/mechanical-keyboards/products/cleave-truly-ergonomic-mechanical-switch-keyboard/ Terrible compared to my current keyboard. Significantly worse than Kinesis Advantage. But not too bad compared to the stock ...

Re: Custom PCB with macro capability for AEK2?
@muriium: Yeah, I know. I use a branch of that firmware ported to ATxmega for many years already. It is easy to port a firmware for a software developer. It is hard for other people though. I guess there are more firmwares with on the fly remap and macros now. But Chris Andreae's firmware was the on...

Re: Custom PCB with macro capability for AEK2?
On the fly programmability (macros or remap) is a matter of firmware. The programmability does not depend on the controller, MCU or PCB. The firmware is not likely to be ported to uncommon HW. E.g. here is a sample of firmware which supports on the fly programmability: https://github.com/chrisandrea...

Re: Hesitating whether to spend $1000 on a 6580 Beamspring
In my opinion it is not worth it. You can have a really comfortable new Kinesis Advantage or Maltron 3D for that price. Hell, I'll sell you a super comfortable custom built K84CS for a bit bellow that price if you are in EU. Well, if you are crazy about having that particular switch kind then you ar...

one can still buy a new buckling spring
https://www.modelfkeyboards.com/ I did not know one can still buy it new. I think the switches are great but the layout is a piece of ****. I would not buy it due to the bad layout but I know there are many buckling spring enthusiasts here who do not care about ergonomic layout. This is not an endor...

If the web site does not provide technical documentation for the plates (e.g. a dxf file or at least pdf files with all the dimensions) then your only option is finding somebody who already bought it and check with him. Re: [HELP] GH60 Plate doesnt fit
If plate does not correspond to PCB then you have few options: 1) use PCB but file the plate where there is a mismatch 2) use on PCB, if it can accept PCB only switches (with two plastic legs at the bottom) then it may be good enough 3) use only plate and hand wire the switches to some standard cont...

That being said, I agree that buckling spring feels good. Just not good enough to compensate for the other shortcomings of the old standard XT layout.

It is a standard layout keyboard. There are many similar off-the-shelf alternatives. Findecanor posted one which is significantly cheaper. It is not worth it.

Ditto on standard layout. But when you can adjust it via firmware you can use it or any other layout that you might think is more efficient. My main point is that it is extremely comfortable to have all the modifiers on thumb clusters (not only ctrl/alt/win but also the shifts). Modern ergonomic ke...

Kinesis Advantage and Maltron 3D are good. Any split keyboard is a progress. Split ones with thumb clusters are pretty good.
Old keyboards may be better when one limits himself to the standard layout but otherwise I do not agree.

Shiny joint is actually good. You do not want joints with "sandy" surface. That indicates low temperature or missing flux. Check visually (*) for a crack in the joint or the PCB wires around it. Reflow the joints with a soldering iron. If you find cracks in the PCB wires then bridge them over with s...
