I like it a lot. I'm a big fan of anything retro, I think because I love interfaces like my old Norton Desktop / Norton Commander machines. I would love to see a mesh between something retro (ala what you have and textfiles.com) and something clean (ala https://news.ycombinator.com ) - but regardless my opinion doesn't matter since it's your site :)

I'll start designing another site soon and will try and use a retro-minimalistic theme ( The site itself will automate the try before you buy mechanism..... )

Design is not open for debate or suggestion, it's something you provision to an artist. That artist might or might not delegate that task to one of his students, under his or hers guided supervision, but that is not up to you. The important thing to realize is that you're not the artist and you never were the artist. So you have no say in it, realize that and forget about it. You can't design a site and that's that, just get an artist.
