What's exacly a "silencemod"? I found several references to it here and on GH, but I could not understand what it is, and neither did I find a topic or wiki explaining what it means.

If your talking about cherrys search O-ring mod. It involves putting rubber o-rings on the stem of your switch to dampen bottoming out.

Now I see... thanks! I wouldn't mind trying those rings, are they available in Europe?

Yes, it takes a little while to put them on.

Instead of the O-rings, there are also "orthodontic rubber bands". These might be better for original Cherry corp. keys, while O-rings might be better for keys from Leopold/Filco/Kinesis etc.
They should be 3/16" size, "medium" or "light". Not all are the same, though. I got two brands: one was marked "medium" and the other was marked "light" and the "light" ones cushion the stroke even more than the "medium" I have. They are not expensive. I bought 200 "light" bands for $5 + s/h on eBay recently, € 5 in total.

I used to use those dental rubber bands when I was a kid, that was bad! But in this case it sounds like a good idea. I think I can get them at the chemist and try! I got my cherry doubleshots yesterday, but they seem louder than the pbts I used before.
How much is 3/16" in metrical units? I guess the smallest will fit, though.

jokes beside.
the o-rings i tried are not as soft as Rutschstopp.
I think the difference in height is also a bit less than with o-rings.

I don't believe in using latex. Latex is a natural product that deteriorates. In humid climate, it can rot. In dry climate, it can dry out and crumble. That said, there are synthetic materials that also deteriorate. I have heard of black O-rings deteriorating after only five years.

That nitrile O-ring is much too thick. 3.53 mm! You won't be able to actuate.

Thanks for the advice! However I'm not finding the orthodontic rubber bands on ebay, I should check at the chemist's.

EDIT: I couldn't find them even there! :(
Findecanor, would you sell me some of yours, if you have spares?

For those who are interested:
I will get a few thousand O-rings in the right size in about 2 weeks.
It should be possible, that I share some for a better price than these ebay auktions.
(of course not cheaper than these "Pellet Bait Bands" but than the O-Rings =)

Depending on price I'm in for some.

I think something about 7-8€ + shipping for 125 rings should be possible.

If you can do it for 10 euros including shipping I will be in.

Depends on where you live! ^^

10€ shipped for about 100 rings would be fine for me! I live in Italy.

If they fit in a standard envelope (weight max 50g) shipping would cost 1,45€ from Germany to UK or Italy. (I am not sure how heavy these rings are)
In a bigger envelope (called Versandtasche in germany, max weight 500g) the shipping would be 3,45€.
Both without insurance, but an insurance would increase the shipping cost unnecessary.

Are those orthodontic rings? I remember them to be very small, they should fit in a very small envelope. Anyway, just let me know when you get the rings! I'll be in anyway. Thanks!

Tarkoon

No, those are no orthodontic rings but "real" rubber o-rings with an inner diameter of 5mm and thickness of 2mm made of Nitrile rubber or Neoprene (this decision is still open). Nitrile rubber would be a litter harder than Neoprene.

EDIT:
I fould a weight calculator. 125 pcs should weight about 8g! =)

Sounds good. Don't know the difference between nitrile and neoprene, I'll rely on your choice!

Tarkoon

31 Oct 2011, 14:29

Neoprene is available in softer variants than Nitrile.

Yes, but it's hard to tell what's better without trying it on the keycaps, isn't it? "Better" may also be just a matter of personal taste, in this case. Maybe the softer material fits better on lighter keycaps/switches, or viceversa. I don't know!

FYI wasdkeyboards sells proper size o-rings for $14 and shipping to Europe is only like $1.50

Tarkoon

That's about 11,20€ with shipping if you calculate with a good currency rate but paypal uses everything else but a good rate...

I'd rather have them shipped from Europe if possible, in order to avoid eventual costum fees.

I will start a thread when the rings are here...
