Why does a terminal keyboard need mains power? And what's that switch on the backk doing? Is this modified for some reason?

Indeed, that seems likely. If there's something like this inside it would explain the power cord and the big case size:

It's a single board terminal that was sold as a kit. Good documentation, which wasn't unusual since folks were literally building their own systems from component parts at that time. The Cinch-Jones connector would have enough pins for RS232 in/out and a video signal, and the power supply to run the board would be inside the case if it wasn't plugged into an S100 bus. The switch was probably for power.

It was a completely different mindset at that time, because a "terminal" (keyboard and monitor) only communicated in ASCII characters (what you see on the keycaps). No graphics, no GUI or mouse, and of course no internet.

you have to use a proxy, and they should be pretty cheap, but they're not the Omron Alps clones, they're the common B3GS

I don't think that footprint is available, you'd have to make it yourself if you plan to use it. Tho outside legs are the same thing, so the switch basically has a built in jumper, which is super handy.

I think this one is online for quite a while and it's quite a bit too expensive, I'd say 100€ max for an untested one, even if the condition seems to be alright on the pictures.
