IBM Model M hybrid?

On most Model Ms, the plate is dull steel colored. On a few old ones, I have found chromate plates inside. These are usually M122s that still have the F style feet. Is this usual?

Someone posted a Dutch made 1987 chrome backed M122 here just the other day, so I'm guessing it's fairly usual:

Shiny model M backplates are mostly (but not always) found in keyboards from 1986 - 1987. I hardly see the shiny back plates on keyboards after 1988.

But even among other 1986 and 1987 keyboards.. it is more common to find model M keyboards with the non-shiny (dull) curved plates
