Gon's keyboard Works

Am new here and trying to build my first keyboard. Struggling to find Cherry Brown switches. Found some at Gon's Keyboard Works in Korea. I see him mentioned a few times on this board, does anyone have anything good or bad to say about buying from him? Are the Cherry switches he sells genuine? I did email him but have not had a reply.

Also they don't seem to ship to South Africa which is a bit of a problem...

Yes! They are new for sure. He also offers "tuning" services for about double the price. I called this "rebuilt". Same thing.

From what I could deduce from his site, the tuning consists of manually taking the switch apart, spraying some lube in, and reassembling. I did ask him why I need it but again, no answer. Guess he sees no point if he doesn't sell to us.

The answer to that question involves jumping in to the keyboard hobby and taking the "red pill" so to speak.

The modifications Gon performs will: replace the spring to change the weight of the switch, carefully add a suitable lubricant to reduce scratchiness, and add stickers to reduce side to side wobble in the switch.

There is a great Japanese word - otaku - that describes the sorts of people who care about this. I haven't found a similar word in English. Maybe Muirium knows one.

Mm… pedantic is being like what I am just now: that's just not *quite* right.

I can't immediately think of a single word to sum up the snake oil, coconut headphones, magical thinking society and cargo cult that surrounds MX switches and their countless mods. It's not all bad, or all complete nonsense, for a start. But I can picture a few metaphors!

I get your meaning ... enthusiastic perfectionism ... must be 'just right' .. meticulous.

Anyway, I decided to let him ship to my brother in the UK instead, but now when it comes to payment, he appears to have two options: PayPal or International Wire transfer, but the Paypal emblem goes to the International Wire option ... do you know if this is correct or am I missing something? Been two decades since I've done a wire transfer and not sure how will it will go with our forex regulations, going to a different address and all.

How can it be so hard to buy something as simple as switches? Where is Amazon when you need them? ...

So it turns out his "wire transfer" is actually Pay via Paypal. All sorted now.... and the waiting begins.
