Re: When you finally reach endgame.

Everybody has a different taste. In my home alone the differences couldn't be bigger. My wife is hating my Beam- and Buckling Spring keyboards with a passion, as it is way too loud for her. She prefere's the worst kind of rubber dome. Any attempt to let her type on it for longer sessions and explain...

IBM 5251 Beam Spring Restoration

IBM 5251 Beam Spring restoration I already posted a restoration document around a full-size 3278 a while back: IBM 3278 Beam Spring Restoration . The majority of the tasks are the same, with a few exceptions. I also want to say some words about my previous post, as I have learned several things sin...

Re: IBM 3278 Beam Spring restoration

I only found this great restoration thread now. Had I seen it sooner, I would have been better mentally prepared for the disgusting foam removal task. :o  One thing I would like to add (and haven't mentioned in my 5251 restoration thread): When I worked on the main inner part (opening/taki...

Re: IBM models F tribute

Can you explain how you got the capacitive sensors calibrated? Was it difficult to do? How easy was it to use the software? I used the xwhatsit controller and the software. Super simple to do if you follow the description in the PDF ( http://downloads.cornall.co/ibm-capsense-usb/installation_beamsp...

Re: IBM models F tribute

... Who knows... Maybe someday I'll sell my car for a beamspring to restore. I have a Beamspring as my primary keyboard at the moment, but it took my quite some time (and money) to get it to the point where the layout is perfect for my daily use. Re: IBM models F tribute

I'm using a model F XT at the office right now. As I mentioned to Chyros the other day I'm mainly a clicky guy but have branched some (I'm typing this on Fujitsu leaf springs) but coming back to the model F....man, it's hard to compete with the F :-) I am so looking forward to the "New Model F". Re: IBM Beamspring 3278 and 5251 adjustments

I'm suprised how closely the powder matches the door, you did a great job color matching the original. In fairness - color adjustment is what it makes it appear as such. In real life the color is somewhat off. The door has much less yellow tint to it and looks gray next to it. I have ordered a plas...

My vote goes to Utility 10CPI. Thanks for dialing in these small details, I'm looking forward to reading your book about the project. I like both, HSD 10CPI and Utility 10CPI, while I prefer the first one - more retro ;) I am also looking forward to the book - it will get a nice place in my office...

Nice job, dark. I think its a good idea to add the symbol tags to the caps, is there any trick you want to share to do this? Well, not a real trick ;) I just bought keycap sticker for the Model M (which are still available). Then I cut them according the Selectric keycaps and my programming and pla...

Re: IBM Beamspring 3278 and 5251 adjustments

These turned out great. What do you think of the 5251 compared to the 3278? Any issues powder coating the 3278 flip out door? Did you reuse the stock plastic door or have a steel version made? First of all - the 3278 is (in my humble opinion) superior. With the adjustments to the keycaps and progra...

IBM Beamspring 3278 and 5251 adjustments

I wanted to show two of my IBM Beamspring keyboards I recently restored and completed. I already posted a restoration guide https://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=19775 for the 3278 on Deskthority, but as an addition, I found out that spray painting of a case that is always in touch with the sk...

IBM 3278 and 5251 boards. Out of these I find myself using the full size 3278 the most (basically a tkl after adjusting the layout). Always wonderful to see those next to each other. I also have my full size 3278 as my primary keyboard, but modified it so it also has a num-pad available. Initially ...

It turned out to be very beautiful. There is a difference to the plastic, which is darker, but it was a good choice to let this do professionally.

Re: IBM 3278 powder coat color

I have my 3278 also out to be powder coated. To get down to a color that is most harmonic, I sanded down the plastic latch with a 600 and 1200 paper, so I got down to the original color of the plastic. I then went with both to the company who does the coating and went through the possibilities. The ...

AJM - happy to trade with you the keycaps (if you want to swap). Once I have it at hands, I will clean everything using a SuperSonic cleaner and make close-up photos.
