In my situation I'm using a microcontroller (atmega32u4) in-between the device (keyboard) and host (computer).

The host is connected using USB so I'm not sure about grounding.
The device is an IBM Model M connected using a female PS/2 cable. The IBM Model M has ...

I'm building a PS/2 to USB adapter ("Soares Converter"), but do I connect the PS/2 wire shielding to GND on the microcontroller? The PS/2 port/cable itself also has a separate ground pin.

I've just finished performing a bolt mod on my IBM Model M (1391401) and it works great!

However, I think I accidentally placed a spring in the hole to the left of the spacebar. (I purchased extra springs so I had a few extras)

That sounds like a good idea to leave part of the shaft, but I already cut mine like shown in the picture above.

I think I still need to locate where the center of the rivet way to make sure it goes through the hole in the rubber membrane and frame, right?

The top (tip) of the cylinder is flat (unlike a normal drill bit). You used that (and not the sides of the bit) to make the rivet area more flat/smooth?

It seems like somebody could create a 3D printable jig that fits around that area to ...

I've just opened my Model M and cut the rivets but they are not completely flat. I used these to cut the rivets as flat/flush as possible:

What's the best way to accurately drill into the rivet without a drill press?

I have a dremel and hand drill but is either one better for this type of mod?

I've just tested this method and it didn't send any keystrokes/letters:

1) Booted to DOS and opened EDIT
2) Once it was open, I plugged in the Model M with 8 pin and 4 pin ribbons attached. No beeps.
3) Hotplugged 16-pin ribbon and beeping started but no text.

Yes, the computer POSTs without error if no ribbons are attached. It will also POST if the 8 pin and 4 pin are attached.

However, once I hotplug the 16 pin cable it begins to beep

Unfortunately I don't have another PC with a PS/2 port.

However, I have done some testing... If I unplug the 16-pin ribbon cable the beeping stops. (i.e. I can leave in the 8 pin and 4 pin cables)

I'm using PS/2 directly on an older Pentium PC.

I've received a used IBM Model M (1391401) and I completely cleaned all of the keycaps and stems and made sure it was absolutely 100% dry.

When the PC boots, the NUMLOCK is correctly illuminated, but then the PC keeps beeping and displays Keyboard Error and nothing works on the keyboard.
