Re: Deskthority Fundraising Campaign 2019

I just wanted to thank all who donated something to keep the shack going. It's actually reinvigorating to see that so many people are so invested in our little website.

Oh well then, we'll be on the scene for at least another 2 years :)

Its not just the drivers being closed , AMD has better support for vulcan , the drives are integrated into MESA so i dont have to screw around instilling them and you get updates and fixes more often. that is true but performance is still very hit and miss. There has been some improvement lately an...

Subscribed! I don't post often but I like to see these old style web boards stay around. If there's any way I can help with the technical side of things let me know. I've been a Linux and BSD admin for well over a decade for a university and before that for their physics department. I'm also crazy ...

you are a little overenthusiastic @Elrick and you are ignoring thousands of horror stories about paypal (eg: https://blog.prusaprinters.org/warning-businesses-never-use-paypal-primary-payment-method/ ). I concur, but I also put my money where my paranoia is and host my own email and Nextcloud on my own hardware in a data center. So, maybe I'm not wholly normal either. Don't get me ranting on GMail these days either! I do the same, but I don't use nextcloud, too messy/buggy I prefer one-app-per-tas...

Re: DTA 2019 preparation

sorry guys, busy week at work. The idea would be: - run a nomination phase, people start vomiting stuff, people can suggest a category for their submission if they want - a commission (me?!) takes the nominations and based on what we have we split them in categories - create the threads (1 per categ...

if you put your username in the description I'm sure webwit will take care of that. Otherwise just contact him in PM

Re: Deskthority Fundraising Campaign 2019

At the moment we are below zero, so anything helps. It is unrealistic to think that we would cover what we actually need with donations from DT users but if that will ever happen anything exceeding will be used for next year's expenses.

it's about €1200-1400 per year for the server (and backups). I don't have the numbers for the wingnuts because webwit never really wanted to share that :P but I'm guessing he is handing like €400-500 for a quantity of wingnuts that lasts a couple of years.

Deskthority Fundraising Campaign 2019

Deskthority doesn't have a steady income anymore. The club helped in the past, but that's ancient history. We still have expenses though and so far they are covered by an absconding webwit just out of his good heart. Hence I'm hereby asking for your support in the form of: A) Put your forgotten or u...

I still think we should have some categories or at least ideas for them to focus people(check the google doc). We should also still have "The Deskthority" as a special award.
we have categories just let the community pick them based on their submissions

okay so, I believe the best course of action for a low-fi DTA 2019 is as follow: 1) Start with just one nomination thread (as per Muirium suggestion). Let people vomit their nominations, at the end check what we have and based on that create the categories. This is the most community driven DTA I ca...

even without gps they can track you from wifi hotspots. If you don't have wifi enabled they can even use the accelerometer to estimate your movements. As soon as you connect to the internet the data is sent home. Data is collected even when you are offline. They made quite some tests on that, search...

good mouse for CAD work?

I find myself doing a lot of parametric CAD lately and I find "standard" mice to be tiring in the long run. Basically what most mice do is placing the middle button under the wheel and that switch is generally a little stiffer. Totally fine in day to day usage but a little upsetting after 6 hours of...
