Re: Objective reasons for using a mechanical keyboard

My wife loves her Apple Magic Keyboard that came with her iMac. She feels that typing on a mechanical keyboard with long key travel is "more work". She's a university professor and author, and before that she was a journalist and a post-grad student, so I'd argue she does her fair share of typing an...

Re: Great/Interesting Finds

Found this just now on Flebay; https://www.ebay.com/itm/Filco-FKB-Skeleton-Vintage-PS-2-Japanese-Keyboard/123605471595?hash=item1cc775d16b:g:JssAAOSwNqRcRdDz Unique looking Filco, with some kind of bamboo-like Alps switches. I like it. Would compliment my Fujitsu Primergy mini-server quite well

Re: Learning to touch-type properly

Some more observations along the way: 1) I have some trouble switching between my laptop (normal ANSI), my desktop (ANSI Filco Minila Air which has a less staggered bottom row and a very troublesome right shift) and my work PC which has a full-size ISO-UK keyboard. Apparently, I will have to standar...

Re: Learning to touch-type properly

Thank you, this is very helpful! I'm not sure I will actually film myself typing, but I will be more conscious about my overall posture. The tip about not resting my wrists is especially helpful. I don't have problems with reaching further keys because I happen to have rather long fingers, however I...

Learning to touch-type properly

I have never been a proper "touch-typist" meaning that I was able to type rather quickly (about 60 wpm on average) but I would use different fingers to hit the same keys and occasionally steal glances on the keyboard. Recently I decided to change this and finally start to touch-type properly: always...

Re: my opinion on Apple Wireless keyboard

Maybe I missed something, but when did the definition of throttling changed from "cannot maintain its nominal frequency" to "does not maintain all-core turbo all the time?" I'm not defending Apple, but I also see this complaint in r/thinkpad all the time, and it's completely ridiculous. Modern Intel...

Re: PSA: don't buy hard drives from Amazon

For what it's worth, the hard drives I've had shipped from them over the years have all been packed as well as any mail order. Been a while, though. What makes me particularly livid is that I bought a cutting mat, a toothbrush and a set of rulers from them in December, and they packed this stuff in...

PSA: don't buy hard drives from Amazon

I ordered two Seagate IronWolf drives from Amazon and they showed up simply tossed into a box, without any padding, freely banging around. I contacted their support and explained the problem. They immediately arranged the return and the guy promised that I will get the replacement drives properly pa...

I have a Filco Minila Air with “horrible obsolete AA batteries” that lasts 1.5 years on one set of said batteries.

I’d take this over a Li-Pol accu any day of the week. Things that require frequent charging suck.

Re: Not Sure I'm Happy with Cherry MX...

Not sure I understand the term. In Russia and other post-Soviet countries, the term "youthful maximalism" («юношеский максимализм») is usually used to describe a mix of misguidedness and strongly held opinions commonly found in teenagers. But judging by the rest of your reply, I was wrong... Nothin...

Re: Not Sure I'm Happy with Cherry MX...

I don't really like typing on Cherry MX boards, but they're very decent switches if we also consider such things as longevity, resistance to dust and debris, complete absence of binding on off-center keypresses, and keycap stability. I think Space Invaders is the only other switch family comparable ...

Yes, it looks like somebody used a very aggressive flux that corroded the trace.

My first instinct would be to clean the PCB with a brush and 99% IPA.

I sent my retrocomputing stuff to Sixty in early January and got a Space Invaders keyboard from him a couple of weeks later. He also gave me some advice regarding NMB switches.

BTW, he told me that he's not interested in keyboards anymore, but apparently he's very much into retrocomputing.

Why do i think it's just Matias red linear stems with the dampeners removed put into a clicky alps switch? I can't see the picture that well on my bad monitor but it looks like there was a space in the sides of the slider for the dampeners. I also tested putting a red linear Matias stem into a blue...

NMB Hi-Tek switch — white linear with LED

Hi all, I have an NMB Hi-Tek 725 AT-style keyboard which works, but has one problem: its Scroll Lock key has a regular (non-LED) switch. I guess it's going to be the same as turntables and all things vinyl. On the height of the vinyl craze a couple of years ago people were trying to sell junky turntables at really inflated prices, however the prices have gone down recently and now it's possible to find even high quality turntables fo...
