Re: XMIT Reviews: Topre Realforce R2 (PFU Limited Edition)

I've installed silencing rings in all my Realforce RGB and NovaTouch boards. I regard them as mandatory. It is a real pain in the butt to do, and I really wish they were standard on all Topre boards, but at least I only had to do it once (per board). And now I have what I consider to be my endgame b...

Re: XMIT Reviews: Topre Realforce R2 (PFU Limited Edition)

Yes, the Realforce RGB comes with MX-compatible sliders. I mean, that's the whole reason to buy it (instead of a conventional Topre board), IMO.

Re: XMIT Reviews: Topre Realforce R2 (PFU Limited Edition)

I can't see myself paying over $300 for a TKL, not even a Topre (which, moreover, can't take my MX-stemmed keycaps). My Realforce RGB boards were a much better value.

Re: What are Topre Switches Like?

Topre are, to my mind, the gold standard in tactile switches. They are like typing on pillows that resist every so slightly before gently giving way. There's really nothing quite like them, and they are my favorite switches.

Re: Post your keyboard/keycaps!

I found that installing the Box Browns was pretty painless and everything went smoothly. However... I first tried to install Zilents, which required snipping off the two plastic stand-off legs on each switch. Even after doing that, I had a very difficult time getting them onto the PCB. Switches that...

Re: Post your keyboard/keycaps!

Yes, the Box Browns are very tactile. Way more tactile than ordinary Cherry MX Browns. Which is fine by me since I think Cherry browns are too much like reds to be worthwhile (might as well just go with reds). The SA keycaps went on fine, not tight at all, and typing on them is really good. Not Topr...

Re: Modern Beamspring? - The Silo Beam Switch

I think the design/product mandate here is to be forward-looking rather than to aim for the retrofit modding crowd. I'm assuming that's where they see their biggest potential customer base: i.e., folks who are looking for entirely new keyboards, as opposed to folks who just want to futz around with ...

Re: Modern Beamspring? - The Silo Beam Switch

During the Kickstarter campaign, you chose which HE switch you wanted, either linear or tactile, and then could add the Silo beamspring switches as a $30 addon. From their website, you order the keyboard and then can order the Silos as a separate $50 purchase. I don't see anywhere you can specify wh...

I agree with Muirium about the NovaTouch, though I'll take it a step further and say that it also helps tremendously to put it in a great case (like something heavy and aluminium). Here's one of my NorbaTouch keyboards (with /dev/tty caps): dev_tty_norbatouch.jpg It is an absolute joy to type on. An...

Re: A look back: The Bloomberg Keyboard

I was used to cheap membrane keyboards, but that's not what I wanted. Discovering high-quality mech boards was a godsend for me. The Cappening thread was a revelation, and after reading it back in 2015 there was no going back to "what I was used to". Ever.

As I understand it, these switches don't have normal contact pins. The connection is essentially magnetic rather than friction-contact. The only keyboard with a PCB capable of mating up with them is the Keystone.

Re: Input Club Beamspring-like? new board

I jumped into the Kickstarter for one of the full-size boards and a side of Silo beamspringers. It'll be a year (probably longer, since no project with any ambitions comes in on schedule) before I get to use it and decide if it will supplant my Realforce RGB. But that gives me something to look forw...

Re: Round 7 / ALGOL-style / Deadline 2018-11-30

I have no idea. I have not heard from 7bit in quite some time. I asked to have the funds I collected transferred to an active collector but he never responded. I am left to conclude that the GB is suspended for the time being and that refunds aren't likely to be released any time soon.

Obviously this GB has gone the way of the dodo, but does any one know a source (font) for the symbols used? I am talking about the Insert/Home/PageUp etc. function keys ... it'd be an elegant solution to an issue I'm having in a multi-language environment ... https://deskthority.net/download/file.p...

iGK61 with Halo True switches and GMK Nautilus keycaps. nautilus_igk61.jpeg I decided to get one of these because I'd been on the lookout for a decent 60% hotswap board with a standard ANSI (i.e., Pok3r) layout, and after watching Chyros' video review I decided this was the one to go with. This keyboard definitely looks intriguing. But the Keystone web page doesn't say if the switches are MX compatible. If they aren't, then this board is useless to me.

Re: BOX switches STILL cracking keycaps!

Right. Stem thicknesses are documented as:

Flawed BOX stem: 1.32mm (too thick)
Cherry MX stem: 1.31mm (just right)
Fixed BOX stem: 1.30mm (a bit thin)

It's amazing what a difference of 0.01mm can make.

Re: Objective reasons for using a mechanical keyboard

The objective reason behind my switch to mechanicals was durability/reliability (over cheap membrane keyboards). I mean, that's what led me to look at mechanical keyboards in the first place. But then I discovered the custom keycap options and my whole set of priorities changed. For me, a keyboard i...

Re: Two-tone design (grey/white)

Uni-color schemes can be elegant if some design thought it put behind it (e.g., Apple's Snow White design scheme). But then NeXT gave the world all-black machines, including the keyboard, and the rest of the world saw it and decided it was so kewl that it had to become the next, monotonous de facto ...
