Model F AT - The "Clippy" Mod

Hello everyone, I tried a few different approaches to stabilize the Model M spacebar installed on my extra modifiers modded F AT but never got it quite right: thickness would interfere with key travel, washers wouldn't stay down, no yaw control, bad adhesion between epoxy and plastic, etc. Recently,...

Re: Any examles of throttle / flightstick being used as a main keyboard - am considering the feasability.

Dasher is certainly an option and could also be used with head or eye tracking mice. If you're still interested in a joystick style setup I remembered this thread (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=74463.0) on GH where the OP built a custom game controller from the ground up. There's also "gaming...

Re: Any examles of throttle / flightstick being used as a main keyboard - am considering the feasability.

Assuming a Windows-based system, a quick search for "joystick input to keyboard" shows two dedicated commercial/shareware options, JoyToKey and Keysticks; AutoHotKey has a tutorial on the topic (https://autohotkey.com/docs/misc/RemapJoystick.htm) which would be free and potentially much more powerfu...

Re: ISO users

The fact that apart from Unicomp *no one* makes stock keysets in my usual layout has put a significant damper on any set collecting ambitions. Also: a preference for PBT because I make ABS shine in no time, and costs because already expensive MX or Alps ISO sets would be imports. Sure, I touch type,...

Re: (Model MF) Remodeling the Model M (aka.. the Mara)

I don't think it is essential that *every* part be interchangeable between legacy and new for our purposes, as per the original post: Phase 1 is the drop-in replacement for the Model M inner assembly that turns a Model M into a functional F. The only parts remaining from the original M are the outer...

Re: Odd problem with IBM Model F

I can barely see any solder on the Teensy, are the connections good? Try grounding the plug too, the original cable's shielding is also grounded. If you want to do an internal USB conversion eventually: solder pin headers to the Teensy then use female/female jumper wires. It's non-destructive as lon...

Say "macro" three times in a row to summon kbdfr :P

Taran from LTT also uses lots of macros with three TMK USB-to-USB controllers and some Autohotkey shenanigans:
We could argue against his rubberdome keyboard choices (2x Logitech K120 and an Azio L70) but not against TMK.

Re: Do any modern Laptops have even halfway decent keyboards?

There's common management between the boards of Clevo and Chicony ( as mentioned in this press release from 2013 ). Back in 2012, before I knew a single thing about mechanical keyboards I bought a Clevo P151EM ( review I wrote at the time ) and the non-backlit chiclet keyboard was from Chicony, back...

I'll second the Matias dampened tactile switch option: much sharper tactility and quieter than unsilenced Cherry MX Brown or Clear. Haven't tried Zilents yet.

You could try sanding the 8 key down to the original whiteness since they're double-shot. It will wreck the texture though.
Could a drop of peroxide cream applied only on the legends with a toothpick work?

Re: Not Sure I'm Happy with Cherry MX...

I don't think I could live without the standard arrow keys though. I use those all the time. For what it's worth you could transform that numpad into an arrow cluster: the zero can be split in two. The F AT can also be ANSI or ISO modded if you don't like the BAE. There's also two pads for the usua...

And because it is Alps, is this like a few decades old? If it is a few decades old, I think I'd rather go with Matias' just due to the durability. The KBParadise and Matias-branded boards on the market are made with current-production "successor" or "clone" switches that share the same keycap mount...

Judging by your current TKL Razer and your interest in the V80, I can't recall any vintage "TKL" form-factor Alps boards: customs and the V80 are your only options. If you're still ok with full size you have much more choice. Thinking out loud: what about click-modding a Dell Bigfoot? I've had one Q...

Re: Not Sure I'm Happy with Cherry MX...

The project itself already has flippers and springs set aside.

For the ping on the Model Fs (or M for that matter), you could always try a "floss mod" which removes a lot of that without affecting feel. Plus it's easily reversible if you don't like it.

Re: Not Sure I'm Happy with Cherry MX...

Maybe I've just been so conditioned to the extreme of buckling springs for 20 years, that anything less harsh and mechanical feels mushy and imprecise by comparison? I would think so. After all the buckling spring's tactility is quite sharp and happens right at actuation. For something more silent ...
