Is this a known problem for IBM Model Fs as well? This is the first I've heard of it.

That screw/bolt mod looks quite different from anything I've seen before.
(Also: good idea to provide a picture of the back sticker)
edit: or perhaps my eyes are just bad - the metal looked a bit warped around the screw holes at first.

There is a very active 7500 posts long thread about that:

You can also buy new buckling spring keyboards from Unicomp, by the way.

Re: Stuff you just bought
I can compare to it's direct predecessor, the Ultra Classic. It's far better than the Ultra Classic in every way. Any other eras I can't compare it to because I've only used Unicomp Model M boards. I can say it still weighs 1.7 kilograms. That's great to hear! I have a few IBM M's and use an UltraC...

In case anyone's interested, I ended up going with this little guy which mmm found for me! Thanks, man! I linearized and damped the switches, making it ideal for office use. 20220606_132555_smaller.png I ended up taking the long way round, but at least I didn't have to bring an adapter ;-) 20220330_...

Yeah, that particular document seems to have vanished off the internet. But take a look at e.g. https://tvsss.co.in/uploads/product/20156252615c5590ce09a5b6.33036861.pdf This also gives the standard spacing of 19mm. I could imagine wood would do something great for the sound! My IBM 5155 Model F chassis is all plastic and honestly sounds better than my XT and New Model F. A deeper, richer sound.

Re: New Model M vs Old IBM Model M
I haven't tried the New Model M, but I have some thoughts on Unicomp's keyboards vs. IBM's. Unicomp had some bad years, quality assurance-wise. No question about that. They've since sprung back, so let's put those years aside. The Unicomp Model M's of recent years can definitely compete with the IBM...

Really not sure. If I was just after function, I'd just buy a GMMK hotswap barebones but I want something that looks nice. There's little personality to the GMMK boards IMO. Re: Mu's New HHKB
It is possible to make custom keyboards which can last for an incredible long time. The ZMK power profiler estimates that it is possible for a keyboard without OLED/RGB installed to last for a year, using the same battery as in the HHKB (2000 mAh). It doesn't seem to far off, as my 110mAh keyboards...

Damn! That's good to know Re: the HHKB controller. Very interested in hearing (well, reading) Hasu's explanation. Running out of power sucks. The easier to get it up and running again in that moment, the better. Plug in USB cable: done. It falls back to become a regular USB keyboard while it’s charg...

Because Hasu is not Logitech. Well, that in itself doesn't explain anything :) His converters are miles better than anything available "mass market". I really hold his stuff in the highest esteem! It’s a home brew marvel that he’s made, exploiting the HHKB’s ribbon cable and shell. Not a mass...

Re: Why aren't other old periphrals better than modern ones like keyboards
I think, again, there aren't too many ways to do a keyboard like a monitor. Full-travel was pretty much the standard for the big chunky keyboards of yesteryear and the last major advancement to change the standard was when flat profile keys were introduced. At least from what I can gather ;) I gues...

There is also this somewhat Apple-y one, ADK64 https://rndkbd.com/products/adk64-60-keyboard-case?variant=37569132757144 But honestly the plastic quality (printing/molding) looks horrendous if you look closely at the pictures. I don't know if some amount of sanding and polishing would be likely to f...

Re: Thoughts on the Matias FK303
I personally found the latter too mushy for me but others really like it, preferring it to the Alps switch even. (notably Chyrosran22 said he preferred it to the cream damped) That's a surprise! I found the keyfeel quite odd - somehow the rubber dampers impart an almost scratchy feeling. But I real...

College students have plenty of time Not true. The workload does vary a fair bit between colleges and over the year, but in general, a "full time" college student does study full time in total - it is just that he/she is able to schedule the time more freely than someone working 9-5. I mean, I have...

I've been off Windows so long I've honestly no idea how old Windows 7 is. My last was XP. Are they on 11 or 12 now? Is it a new number every year, like every other OS these days? Quite the contrary! Windows 10 came out in 2015 and is supported at least until 2025. Windows 11 only came out a couple ...

Re: Thinking of buying an NCR80
Why not use that handy Control key as Esc, with similar tap-logic to what you describe? That's a place for an incessant key, not all the way up in Greenland! That's not a bad idea, actually. Being a Dane, however, Greenland of course holds a special place in my heart - as does the Esc key! (And her...

As for interesting Fn/modifier key placements, there is the (in)famous SpaceFn layout: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=51069.0 Unsurprisingly, this layout places the Fn key on the spacebar! Using the same tap/hold logic. It's something I might consider if it weren't for the fact that I use Fn+S...

Re: Thinking of buying an NCR80
Got to say I’m with Choc on this one. A far-flung key like Escape (especially when it’s up on its own, far left of the function row) is a terrible choice for a modifier . You see where the rest of them are, right? Well, no. Layer keys are not necessarily for one-hand chording. I only use the...
