Hey there,
I bought an old cherry g81 with lasered keycaps just because of the spacebar, alt, ctrl and window key.
I already have a full set of Doubleshots, salvaged from an old g81 winkeyless and I need those keys to get rid of the stock black caps on my Quickfire...

And now this: Image

What... how... why?
I never saw this before :/

Ah, but good old fashioned evil. Crystalline, pure.

Ahem. I'd best stop summoning the Kurtz before Martin Sheen shows up.

Yep. The Cherry G81 keyboards with 1.25 Windows keys are like that. G80 keyboards are not.

One thing that you should also know is that no G81 or G80 Space Bar will fit the Quickfire. When the windows keys were added to the G80/G81 line, the location of the space bar switch stayed the same even though it was one unit shorter on the right side. The Quickfire has the switch in the centre of the space bar.

If you are lucky, maybe someone has a Moogle kit to sell.

I already knew the issue with the spacebar but the alt, ctrl and win key shoked me :/
Man this sucks :(

I am thinkin gabout to mod the keys, I have the keys from the numlock wich are left over...

I have no idea why they did this... This makes no sense to me at all :(

Thanks for posting this.

Could it be that the whole G81 line is pure evil?

It is bro... it is...

You can mod them to fit. Try the search here and on GH. There should be some threads about it.

I already know those threads but I really wanted to avoid modding them... the good news is, it seems they are thick PBT so thats at least something ;)

Yeah, that is unusual. I have two sets of G81 keys that are all thin PBT...

But modding a lasered keycap? I'd rather say: go for purple ... ;-)

You mean Dyeing?

I think he is referring to the GMK white on purple mod pack.

Yes I was, sorry I was so vague.

I (as a newbie) still haven't given up hope for a similar kit in Cherry's "black on beige" and "white on black" instead of purple. A lot of Europeans would surely buy that, given the low prices for winkeyless vintage boards on ebay.de. OK, some investors in overpriced plastics might burn down the organizer's house while he's sorting ... :o

The purple mod pack is really nice but not really usefull for me. Some keys are missing to replace the grey keys with purple, that would look cool and I could keep my beige doubleshots. But it seems that I must mod the caps from the G81.

I still don't know why cherry did this?

Maybe I am going to dye the whole set of caps, the DS are really shiny :(

With patience you can score lasered G80-3000 boards on peebay for under 10€, those would give you the keys you're looking for in center stemmed.
Also i'm confident the purple set will look very good mixed in with white/beige.

There is not only the purple set. There are also CMYK modifiers, which imho would fit way better with the beige/white cherry sets, because of the black legends.

In my experience, G80 boards in white/beige with Windows keys go for at least 30 € on ebay. Only winkeyless boards are more common and cheaper. Maybe I just wasn't lucky enough here.

@cookie: sorry, you're right about the purple set being incomplete. My board is white on black, and I thought my problem was the same, but in fact mine could be solved with the purple set while you will have remaining beige caps.

@bimboBB: in the CMYK modifier pack the windows keys are missing.

Yup ~30€ is regular, below is with patience. Still for 30 with some luck you also get 105 usable (mostly black) mx switches to desolder. It also gives you arrow keys and numpad bottom row in B-profile plus a 6.25 spacebar (which you need to 1x stem mod though). Mixing lasered caps into white/beige DS is a also lot more subtle than with "hellgrau".
What i had to learn from experience is that SP modifiers (i.e. moogle kits) are almost as tall and steep as cherry A-profile.
I had to spend significantly more than 30€ until i learned that i just should have gotten a G80..L in the first place (mainly due to impatience).

p.s: Kleinanzeigen is also a source for used G80

@Halvar: That purple set with esc, F5 to F8, Arrows etc... man I would go for it! :) Would look soo great with the beige caps :D

@Jmneuv: Good advice with the ebay Kleinanzeigen, I will take a Look :)

This Weekend I will try to modify the caps and I will post the results here...
I got 2 Sets of doubleshot Keycaps from g81 Winkeyless boards and I never thought it will become such a pain to get the missing caps...

Thanks a lot for the good advices, I will keep an eye open for a set of lasered PBT Caps from a g80.
I ususally go for g81 when I am looking for keycaps because they go away for really low prices but this off center shit supprised me!

A friend of mine has a sandblaster, I will try to sand the ugly legends down from the stock Quickfire caps, this could turn out really nice!
