Going custom is all about embracing the fact that everyone has a different definition of their perfect keyboard. Some people even demand numpads, for goodness sake!

The 60% I'm working on now is programmable by definition. It's based on a Teensy controller. It's not really a custom if you're stuck with the same layers forever, anyway.

Right now, we're limited to Cherry and Matias switches. But there's a lot of hacking going on these days in buckling springs, which could be just fantastic. Topre: you're right, Cookie, there's no such thing as a cheap donor to play with. Yet, for all that I admire Topre's work, it's not so out of reach for us to make our own. We're getting better tools all the time (3D printing, CNC…) and the keyboard looks like a great place to jump in with fresh invention and disruption. They're fundamentally the same as they were twenty, thirty years ago. Indeed: worse, mostly!
