I asked this on geekhack, but got no answer. It seems like technically it is not what it once.
The USB port on my RK-9000 died. Looking around a bit I see that it seems to be a common problem.
Anyway I'm going to attempt to replace the port. I just wanted to check the proper procedure. I was going toi order these:

clip two legs off one and solder it in place. Other then the fact that the leads are very close is there any thing tricky or off in what I am describing?

( I plan on pretinning the leads, then heating the leads and letting the solder flow to the pad. I'm ordering ten so I can practice a little first. )

Sounds about right. Have you tried removing the original port? Sometimes they throw some glue under stuff like that just to delight…

Yeah I got the original port of. I'm just worried about putting the wrong port in. These are described as type B and I've seen other places where they say type AB. I have no clue what the difference is,

Wikipedia has the lowdown:

I'd say you're buying "Mini USB sockets", like what you'd find on a Ducky keyboard or a Teensy 2. Most of my stuff uses those. But you're right: the naming system is complex and misused plenty.

When replacing the port I would also find a 90 degree adapter to plug into the port on the back and secure it down somehow to prevent future damage of the same problem. Unfortunately I assume this is a surface mount plug and they never seem to hold up to any stress.
