IBM Model Number Controller Differences

I am trying to fix a model M with a busted controller. It's model number is 1390131 and I can get a replacement controller from a pretty much trashed (but still working) model m of this model: 1391401. The wiki says they're very similar aside from the casing.

What I want to know is that is there any difference between those two controllers? If so, what are they? Are they completely interchangeable?

You might get lucky.

I used to have a photo of a dozen Model M controllers, and the differences got radical later on.

If the 1391401 is from the early days (ie 1980s) you chances are pretty good. If it is from the 1990s I would bet against it.

Yeah the 401 is from like 88 or 87. Alright, I'll try it out in a few days when I can get my hands on the spare controller.

Get the whole keyboard. A very early 1391401 is almost as desirable as a 1390131.

It's a bit of a train wreck. Really messy. Like really really really messy and missing caps. Damage everywhere.

If it is old enough, it has a very heavy metal back plate that is highly desirable. If you are doing bolt-mods, somebody will surely appreciate that plate.
