Replicating the "out of case" feel

Hi guys. So one of the central struggles I've been having with the purchase of the Anne Pro was perfecting the feel of the tactile switch. I had a unicomp 122 key buckling spring board for a bit, and I loved the tactility, but there was always something I didn't like about the feel of those particular switches. I thought it was just the nature of that particular type of switch, so I thought changing to the more modern gateron blues would give me some insight into what I actually liked about tactile switches.

However, almost immediately, I noticed that I was becoming keenly aware of the sounds of the Anne's keypresses reverberating around the case. I tried silencing this by placing rubber washers between the pcb and the case standoffs, by filling the case with felt, and finally by using orings to destroy most of the sound, but none of these were good solutions, varying from not working to actually destroying a part of the key feel that I enjoyed (I love having the two sounds of both click in the switch and the bottom out sound.

Anyway, one day I decided to just do away with the case completely and use the board without any case whatsoever. Now this is the feel I was searching for, but I can only achieve this by having the bare pcb unprotected at all times on my lap. This isn't a very good solution, as the battery makes it impossible to achieve the same feel on a table. So my question is: is there any way to achieve the same feel of being outside a case completely whilst still having some sort of protection? I'm ready to crack out the tool shed and make a case from raw materials, but I can't think of any that would achieve this specific use case.
