The SSK Manual (Extended Character Set with Space Saver Keyboard)

Hey guys,

I have finally been getting around to digitizing some peculiar manuals thanks to Ellipse for reminding me to do so.

While I've owned the manual that came with my SSK for a long time it dawned on me that I haven't seen anyone else talk about; maybe someone has but if so I am not aware of it. I also don't know if it has ever been scanned in. What's funny is that the manual refers to it as a "Extended Character Set with Space Saver Keyboard". I know self-proclaimed purists have often criticized when these keyboards were colloquially referred to 'Space Savers' (especially one particular banned member on GH), but here we have genuine proof that IBM occasionally also called them that. So Space Saver Keyboard isn't technically incorrect after all.

What gets me are the depictions of the "Space Saver" itself, IBM drew what looks to be like a hybrid of a regular 84-key SSK and the Unsaver, creating an ISO 86-key Model M (it would have been fascinating if this is what the SSK prototype looked like):

Near the end of the manual there are glyphs of the 'extended characters', and IBM used the un-striped logo on the last page, fairly unusual for 1992 documentation.

I plan to release some more manuals soon (including the M13's manual which is far less interesting), but a few pages for that need a re-scan and time to remaster.

I've branded the PDF with "Scanned by members at DESKTHORITY.NET" and the deskthority logo: as with many of the projects happening here, it's a community effort and I'd rather have the hard work and discoveries get the credit they deserve by the members here. If anyone here thinks the deskthority notice is a problem or distasteful, let me know ASAP and I can remove it and re-upload the PDF without it.

If it needs to be uploaded somewhere else like the wiki, I'd need someone to assist with that as I've never worked with the deskthority wiki.

Cool stuff. We love to see documentation here.

I like that they refer to it as space saving or compact on the first page in all languages, except German.
In German they call it "Text-/Datentastatur (85 Tasten)" which means "text/data keyboard (85 keys)".

I Imagine the manual writing process like this: "You can't just call something compact in German. That's not acurate enough for German customers. They need some cold hard facts."

Oh wow, thanks for pointing that out! That's hilarious... you're right it's the only one which explicitly states "85 keys" in brackets without a generic descriptor like space saving.
:D
