Looking good. I like the red esc key :D I will be doing a similar thing for my AT soon.

Holy moly your collection is insane, they're all lovely keyboards. I'm awestruck at this point, especially with that f122, like wow!

Hi all,

My HHKB with Domikey Cherry style doubleshot ABS keycaps. Enjoying these keycaps, their profile follows the original HHKB keycaps, but they're just a tiny bit higher.

Nice keycaps on your F AT! I need to have a nav cluster and num pad available, especially while teleworking during confinement. So it's interesting to see how people use their ATs. I've also spacebar modded mine, yielding an immediate increase in productivity 8-)

I added a nav layer under the right hand (very effective) but left the numpad in its original configuration. The other day my wife said, "it's moving the cursor instead of typing numbers!" So I pressed Num lock. "But now I can't use the arrows? WTF." :? So I'm testing out a sideways T nav. Let's see how it goes. Hey, at least it's not a block nav...

I recently built this custom G80-11800 with a YDKB Grape PCB, custom steel plate, Cherry MX Silent Blacks and EnjoyPBT 9009 keycaps. I also lined the case with EPDM foam to make it even more quiet and to have it feel more solid. It's still slightly pingy, though.

I have 2 sets of plates for this layout left, they are not perfect and the arrows and numpad are on a separate plate, but they work fine. If anybody has a use for them, just PM me!

On the subject of sound: the creaky spring noise that MX silent switches make remains one of my least favourite things about the whole family. My Filco rings a bit, of course!, but even the slowest, gentlest keypresses creak, some switches more than others. The End key makes me picture a vampire lurching out a gothic door!

On the Silent Blacks I don't notice any creaking until I go very close to the keyboard. Overall I'm really happy with the Silent Blacks, although the springs could be a tiny bit lighter for my taste.
On another custom board with Silent Reds it is much more noticeable and they are indeed quite inconsistent in creaking, but they obviously use a different, lighter spring.

Aye, my board o’ eerie silent creaks is indeed a Filco stocked with silent reds. Those coarse wound springs must be the culprit.

Are the different springs of reds and blacks (specifically the silent versions) actually the same gauge wire wound to a different coil count? Or is the wire itself distinct?

This is probably not the right place to discuss this further, but we're on Offtopic-thority anyway! I took a quick comparison pic between a Cherry MX Silent Black (left) and Silent Red (right) spring. The wire is definitely different, but unfortunately I can't accurately measure the wire gauge with my crappy calipers.

I'd wager they're the same wire gauge and that the creaking stems from a tolerance issue with the spring rubbing against the housing somewhere.

The creaking comes from the spring rubbing against the peg in the bottom part, onto which the spring is stuck. A design flaw, that affects more or less every mx style switch. Thankfully it's easily solved with putting lube in this place.

The kind of “easily” which involves desoldering every switch in the entire Filco, I guess?

Some of us like switch modding. I do not belong to that group! What a hassle!

What’s extra annoying is I like the weight of reds, so no need to monkey around with custom springs (which I do have around here somewhere). And as these are silents, they are already damped. What really want from them is silky smoothness and mechanical silence, consistently across the keyboard. That’s a tall order for MX!

@Nuum

Sure looks the same gauge to me. Intriguing how much difference a coil count makes. Maybe there’s more to it than just that: a different alloy perhaps? The distinct colour raises that possibility. I mean, the only thing I really know about springs is Hooke’s Law. How does coiling them more reduce their return force? I’ve no idea.

Ahhh but it isn't coiling them more, it's the gauge and total length of the wire. A coil spring is just a torsion rod wound into a coil. When you compress it you're just twisting the wire. If you make it longer with the same gauge wire you'll have a lighter spring. Wound into a coil "longer" means more turns closer together.
