I'm going to bolt-mod one of my model Ms, do I have to stick to M2x8mm bolts or can I use M3x8mm since it is much easier to get hold of. The hole in the metal backplate is 3mm wide at it's narrowest.

On each side of the holes in the barrel plate are the "crescents" - raised protrusions of plastic that ensure proper spacing of the layers.
A properly drilled hole allows a 2mm machine screw to go through without disturbing the plastic raised crescents on each side.
Also, using a 2mm shaft to go through a 3mm hole in the metal plate allows for a bit of "play" that a 3mm shaft does not, in case you are slightly less than perfect in drilling your holes.
