HHKB Fn Toggle On/Off?

Has anybody ever tried to set the HHKB's Fn key to toggle on and off to activate the second layer instead of holding it down? I downloaded the software to remap the keys, but I didn't find a way to change settings that way.

I wanted to find a way to do it without having to set it through the OS. Instead I wanted to know how to set it through the keyboard itself. So it will work wherever I plug it in.

Software? Is this some new thing for the HHKB Hybrid etc.? Never had any of that back in my day.

Hasu’s controller would let you do this easily. The standard controller does not expose the Fn key to the host at all, so you can’t remap it, at least not on the HHKB Pro 2 that I know.

I think you might be out of luck, just had a look on my HHKB Keymap tool and it doesn't seem possible. It is really limited in what you can do on that program, and I know hasu was looking at 'hacking' it a couple of years ago, not sure how far he got with it.

As mu said, you'd get more customization with a Pro 2 & custom controller such as Hasu's.

This is the HHKB as I know it. Hasu treats Fn just like every other key. It can assume superpowers like all the rest. You’d just set it to T1 (toggle) instead of L1 (layer) to get what you want.

Hmmmmm...

It might be awhile before I get a chance to try it out. For now I am getting used to the holding down Fn key. I already have the QMK software I got to toggle on my Mode F Repro ready when it arrives. I still think the juice is worth the squeeze getting that set up.

Thanks for pointing me to it. I'll check out this TMK software and get familiar with it before planning to get the controller.

P.S. Then no Hasu controller for you. He doesn’t support the new models.

I’m not sure what you can do, because this has to be done in the controller itself. Hidden Fn key is hidden from any converter, can’t patch it once it’s lost.

Maybe get used to holding Fn while you hit arrow keys like every other HHKB user?

I could put a toggle in there on my Hasu Pro 2s but the need never occurred to me. It’d just trip me up with the need to maintain its state in my head rather than just by pressing the key!
