Just posting my preliminary thoughts on how to reduce vertical height of the beam spring switch... I'm not sure if these designs would save enough of it to be worthwhile.

The first mounts the cylindrical spring inside the switch. The second relies on the principle of expansion instead of compression.

Put a larger compression spring around the fly plate mechanism and you can reduce it further. You would need to shrink the fly plate a little and maybe make it circular instead of square.

I was thinking in the vein of what xmit is saying is having 2 springs in the corners which go from the bottom of the switch up to the plunger, and in the other two corners are slots that the plunger legs go into. That should make it so it will only be ("Full Travel" + "height of plunger from metal to plastic connection to the top of the stem") high. The only issue with this is it doesn't allow for angled keycap stems which seem to be the thing that prevents off center click binding or roughness.
