Thickness of steel plates changes (the earlier, the thicker) thickness of cases (also earlier the thicker) you will also find that some late lexmark models use flat fixed cables as opposed to SDL removable cables.

They also sound different in my experience which I guess it's due to the thicker plates on the older ones
