Re: Yet another beamspring refurb (5251)

Could a drop of peroxide cream applied only on the legends with a toothpick work? I wonder, if it is really oxidation that caused the yellowing. I'd love to hear the thoughts of @Chyros (a PhD in Chemistry can be so handy at times). I'm no PhD, but I'd say it's UV exposure that causes the yellowing...

Re: Yet another beamspring refurb (5251)

You could try sanding the 8 key down to the original whiteness since they're double-shot. It will wreck the texture though.

he seems to be in pursuit of history's pingiest board.
Correct answer: Apple M0110 original Macintosh keyboard. The ping emperor.
I had a roommate in college that would use that board when I tried to sleep. I wanted to feed it to him.

Re: Sperry UTS-400 Cleaning and Conversion

So I finally got my foam, and I found the anti-static computer component bags that I knew were lurking around my apartment somewhere. So I decided to cut ~4"X4" squares out of them and laminate them. I ran out of PVA glue, so I went to the hardware store and got some of this interesting DAP brand la...

There's a keyboard that's very similar that Atex Terminal at the recycling center near me, but unfortunately it's in their "props rental" department and not for sale. Wish I could have been there! :)

Re: Sperry UTS-400 Cleaning and Conversion

So today I pried the foam disks out of the switch housings, and sure enough the foam was rotted more than I had realized. The key feel was okay when I tried it, so I'm looking forward to typing on it when it's finished. I separated the stiff plastic disks and gave them a wash. IMG_0930.JPG It looks ...

Re: IDENTIFY THE KEYSWITCH thread

I recently bought this keyboard hoping for Alps, but no dice (I think). The switches are very clicky and rather course. Not terrible, but not great. The keycaps are pretty nice. They're double-shot MX mounts. Any idea as to what the switches are? Hi! I ended up getting one of these just recently as...

Re: Alps Appreciation

I just discovered that my ancient Harman/Kardon amp has a legendary Alps Black Beauty potentiometer inside. I always wondered why its volume knob felt superior to anything else. It's such a silky smooth and perfectly dampened knob action... Now I know that not only Alps keyboard switches, but also ...

Re: IBM beam spring and vintage computing prices in general - speculators?

This is a really good read, and I've pondered the speculative nature of this keyboard hobby for some time now. If you are trying to think of it as a purely cost/benefit relationship it won't make sense until you address the "Big Shaggy"; the part of the human psyche that cannot be mapped via simulat...

Re: What's in the box?!?!?! (IBM Industrial SSK)

My plan right now is to use hot water to gently heat the case. Then apply force, either with weight or clamps, while it cools down. Just doing this a little bit I've already noticed the more drastic bends straightening out. It will be difficult to deal with the warping though. For instance, the cas...

Non-expert opinion this, but I think a model M is a great start. They're easily available, with clean ones going for a decent price if one must buy them. They're often just found. I agree. Although the M2 is a nice board, it'll almost certainly need new capacitors and/or a membrane cleaning. A Mode...

Okay so I took the PCB apart from the switch plate. Sure enough it looks like the foam is rotting, and some of the capacative material fell off of a few of the pads. Thanks for the info, Tim! :) I'm going to need lots of hand holding on this. My next step is to separate the PCB from the key housing. I'll probably end up doing the foam and foil replacement. I think I have a bunch of anti-static bags around here somewhere...
