Re: Great/Interesting Finds

It would actually be very nice if the springs were lighter. I think the switches could do with some lube as well - they're a bit rough.

Re: Great/Interesting Finds

I've got one going spare if the auction doesn't work out, could do with the drawer space to be honest so you'd be doing me a favour! I used to have one, it was alright. The switches feel like a mix of linear space invaders and Cherry MX Blacks. They are quite silent and bassy. Unbelievably stable!

Re: IBM Model F 104 'Unsaver' find

Actually, you can get away with bad foam if the Model F assembly is "tight" out of the factory, such as this XT assembly I purchased from Redmaus. I specifically requested the pingiest Model F he could find, and he found a very clicky one. I've just opened it and checked it, the foam is COMPLETELY f...

Re: IBM Model F 104 'Unsaver' find

It happens! I had a really dirty XT with a missing key and the usual corrosion on the barrel frame, but the foam was still beautiful. So is yours by the looks of it. I still think it would help to make a new foam mat, now that you've cracked the assembly open. You might be lucky, I don't know. Put i...

Re: IBM Model F 104 'Unsaver' find

Not sure what you know about Model F keyboards, but the foam mat is probably the most important part when it comes to the functionality and key feel of a Model F. It acts as a spacer between the barrel frame and barrels, pressing them against the PCB. It disintegrates most of the time, making the ke...

Re: Zenith KBD17/163-73 Rebuild

Absolutely gorgeous. I've been tempted to restore my ZKB-2 at some point using just such an industrial grey colour scheme, and a black XT badge :D . Similarly I'm still tempted to do a repro run of XT Zenith badges. They're just so good-looking :D . I tried to get a badge-making company to make gol...

That looks tasty.

That red mounting plate reminds me of the first Model F I got, a custom Model F AT from just_add_coffee. That had metallic red vinyl wrap under the keys.

Re: Help with flashing Soarer's converter

Okay, so it's not the protocol that's the issue. When I plug in just the Set 3 converter and no keyboard, it's set to PC/XT and Set 1 until a keyboard is detected. I get an R05 error when I plug in the Battleship, so I need to try and figure out what the issue is. Is it possible it's making use of t...

It's beautiful. I love how alien these old boards look. The ridge with the 24 function keys looks great.
I know, I absolutely love the F/M122 aesthetic. My M122 has a few jank springs so I just keep it leaning against the wall as a display piece.
So did I with my other M122.. heh.

It works with lagacy.sc but maybe it’s choking on yours. I honestly don’t know what .bat files do with error messages. But I know scas and it’ll tell you when you’re doing it wrong.
Nah, I don't get any errors.

Such a shame this isn't working, I feel like I'm so close to the solution...

Re: Help with flashing Soarer's converter

Try running scas separately. You might be achieving nothing due to an error the batch file obscures. (Bear in mind the last .bat file I ran was in the 1980s though!) Thanks for the tip, but what do you mean? Scaswr.bat is obviously working, because I can restore the settings to default with legacy.sc

You do know that Soarer’s Converter resets every time you write a config? So you need that force command at the top of whatever else you’re doing.

I’m guessing you’re just going with that one command here anyway.
I'm literally just dragging an .sc file with "force set3" into scaswr.bat

Re: Help with flashing Soarer's converter

I give up. Have no clue what's wrong. Either it's: 1. Busted wiring (data - clock cables swapped) 2. Busted chip on the controller or some part of the controller board. 3. Some exotic protocol which I seriously doubt. IBM was all about standardization and compatibility. Thanks for your help, regard...

R05 - timeout - started receiving clock from the board, but didn't receive enough for a full code R06 - start bit - read a start bit, but it was incorrect Come to think of it maybe it's a busted cable. Help with flashing Soarer's converter

Hi guys, I'm trying to get my 4980 Model F to work with my Orihalcon 240° 5-pin DIN to USB Set 3 converter, as it does not output any scancodes. When I open hid_listen, it says the Keyboard ID is 0000, running code Set 1 and set to PC/XT mode. I get R05 and R06. I have included a picture for referen...

Re: IBM model F's tribute

I just landed myself with a super rare, but not necessarily super desirable, 4980 terminal Model F! It looks like an F122, but has split modifier keys and the only stabiliser is under the spacebar as a result. It has a short, stepped right shift, two return keys instead of an ISO Enter, 1U backspace...
