with some pieces of rubber to avoid more damage. but didn't took more than 2 attempts. Folded cardboard, the rough brown kind, is the best way to buffer yet hold firmly and avoid scarring. Don't be discouraged until at least half a dozen attempts have failed. I have done dozens of these, and even f...

it was too wobbly Some types have ball joints under the pressure pads, and those can be hard to keep stable under the thin edges of the plates. That is picture I sent. I have used that kind but it is tricky. If you can find the kind that have flat pressure plates that don't swivel, that would proba...

It seems like you have some aversion to getting a bar clamp, they are simple and cheap. That is the only reasonable way to slide the plates back together. I do usually give it a tap with a hammer at the very end, but only after it is assembled properly. https://express.google.com/u/0/product/3090523...

Don't trust the colors if you don't have the original cable, and remember that the diagrams show the socket, not the plug.

Re: Can someone explain to me the whole Geekhack

Geekhack is lighter in weight that Deskthority and occupied by a number of pseudo-trolls, who can be argumentative and profoundly annoying, but not to a degree that rises to the level of "toxic" although it has been buffeted by a number or storms. There is a lot more non-keyboard and keyboard-tangen...

Not all male-to-male mini-DIN cables have 4 or more active wires.

I once had one with with only 3 pins actually live and it was driving me crazy on a Northgate.

It is good to say where you live. For example, international postage outbound from the US is ridiculously expensive, and there is not a "small packet" option as there is in most countries. If it does not lie flat and flexible in an envelope less than 2 cm thick, then it is considered to be the same ...

Wheelwriter ones use different stabilizers. As I recall they have square holes or something.

I would wonder whether someone spilled a sugar drink into it, and if I was going to give up anyway, I would protect the circuit boards as best I could and soak the rest in water for an hour. If it was something simple that might let you peel them apart.

Re: Tell me about your experience with dome boards

At work I use an IBM KB-8923 because it is in a place where it might sometimes be vulnerable to dirt and physical damage, as well as the fact that other people also use it occasionally. It was the replacement for the Model M in the mid-1990s, and it is quite sturdy and reasonably satisfying to type ...

They go up and down, but if you find a decent working one under $200 you should consider yourself lucky. For years you could hardly give an XT away, it has only been in the last 3-4 years that XT prices have climbed out of the $35 range. Without data to back it up, I feel that ATs are at least an or...

When I bought my first computer system in 1987, each component was a separate, expensive piece costing one or more hundreds of dollars - keyboard, printer, monitor, if my memory serves me (and it may not) I think that even a mouse cost $50 or something like that. And I am referring to common, consum...

WTF That is a hell of a Model M mod,not sure all the extra brass and leather is worth what they're asking. I love these steampunk projects, that is one of the most interesting ones I've seen, although I don't actually like the design itself and it certainly isn't as clean as Datamancer's work.

I have tried this twice, the first one was a disaster and the second try was marginally successful but not pretty. Yours is very well done. There are different ways that they can become dislodged. The "ears" are supposed to lie in little troughs and one or both sides can come out. Or they can be misaligned completely. Are you sure that the key stems are seated properly? That can take several tries, and sometimes you need to stand the ke...

The "flippers" (pivot plates) have obviously jumped out of their tracks. I was able to open and close XTs a couple of times by hand before I started working on the big Fs, but nowadays I always use clamps.

The badges on the Wheelwriter typewriters that I have had have been entirely different, but that is not to say that there may not be some that fit.
