I would look at Tai Hao's offerings: https://www.tai-hao.com/catalog/ins.php?index_id=83 https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_list&c=430 If you want vintage and are looking for doubleshot ABS there are numerous options, if you want dye-sub PBT you are more limited. *Some* very ea...

Re: IBM Selectric II (2) with accessories - question?

Do keep the "golf" balls, they are probably worth $10-$20 each, and are not bulky or heavy.

I would like to have a good clean Selectric but shipping is prohibitive.

After cracking it open to move pivot plates and springs into the proper positions, that's what you meant, isn't it?

Re: IBM Model F Cleaning/Restoration Question

Soaking the plate and barrels in warm soapy water for an hour or overnight will get that residue off without much manual effort. Soaking in vinegar water will get the rust off, but will leave it subject to immediate new rusting unless you get it painted. I love Rustoleum and read the label, many of ...

Re: A yellowed '86 "Type I" Model M122

I have never seen a 1st generation 122-key M terminal from Greenock, so I can't say for sure, but my understanding was that Model M cases are PVC. But then again, Greenock made ABS space bars, so who knows. Honestly, I have never seen a yellowed IBM M/F case. I say don't do anything for a bit and se...

Even without being serviced by Northgate Bob this is a good deal.

In my opinion, this is the ideal flavor of Omnikey and I would buy it myself if I didn't already have 3 of them.

I think that I had a buckling spring knock-off that looked like that many years ago.

It was dramatically inferior to an IBM and caps and parts were not interchangeable..

Re: When did you first start appreciating keyboards?

I think it was about cost. Before the mid '90s not everyone owned a PC. When I got my first computer in 1986 I got an XT keyboard, which I paid for as a separate line item - for $100-$200 as I remember. I used that well into the 1990s when I got a Gateway system from my brother-in-law (including ke...

Does that mean reset the keyboard or reset the computer?

Tangentially off-topic, I have noticed that with some PS/2 keyboards connected to modern motherboards, simply pushing any key turns on the computer even if it is shut down. What is that about?

Hey Chyros, as an Alps fan, what's your opinion on floss modding? Obviously, not everyone wants or can use a loud keyboard. In my opinion, floss modding is a process that "civilizes" a Model F keyboard by knocking off some of the overtones (aka "pinging" or "singing") that some people love but othe...
