Cherry Switch Tester Board

Cherry MX send this to me yesterday. I am purchasing at Taobao monthly. But they dont have MX Lock or Cherry Vintage Switches.


I hope someone can help me fill this Switch Tester Board.

The ones you're missing haven't been made for some while (not sure when MX Lock production stopped, but vintage ended mid-90s). I think MX Locks are quite expensive.

By the way, there were several vintage MX variants, not just Black (though Black is the most common). I've found mention of Black, linear Grey, Brown, Clear, Blue and two weights of clicky switch with Clear-coloured sliders (see wiki/Cherry_MX_White); and I'd guess the spacebar on Clear boards would have a tactile Grey. There might even be vintage Greens as the spacebar switch for Blues... so you might need some more holes in that tester!

Oh, and don't forget Super Blacks

(Edit: try a WTB post in the marketplace to start with. I know several of our members desolder switches from boards or have stocks of old switches - you might get lucky, particularly with the commoner vintage switches.)

MX Lock was discontinued in 2015, after 30 solid years of not being used in keyboards! When it was discontinued, it was clear/black/black, while the only keyboard to feature one, from 1985, had the familiar black/grey/black colour scheme. Cherry couldn't say when black/grey/black stopped being made (something to do with the grey material no longer being produced) but 7bit seemed to be able to buy them new around 2012. Then you've got the all-black MX Lock that alps.tw got hold of; as usual, there are no details of where he found it or who gave it to him (and where they found it), so that one is a mystery to both us and Cherry.

Someone here has a spare Hirose MX Orange, but I forget who …

One that nobody seems to have is click grey.

Just checked - I have one (contained in a magnificent keychain by Half-Saint exactly like 7bit’s shown here).
It is unused, but you would have to replace the internal contacts and bottom shell (all "legs" having been cut to fit the plastic case).
No idea what the switch can be worth (the rest of the keychain is not for sale) - make an offer if interested.
